System. There are basically four options of systems that can go in a home. One option is a gas pack which has everything you need for heating and cooling in one package and uses gas or propane for heat. Another option is a package heat pump, like the gas pack, it is all in one heating and cooling but uses the refrigerant for heating along with backup heat strips as well, but uses no gas unless you get a dual fuel pack which uses gas or propane for backup heat instead of electric. The other two options are called split systems. You can either have an AC condenser  that sits outside with a gas furnace either in a closet, attic or a basement or crawl space. Or you can have a Heat Pump condenser outside with an air handler in your attic, closet or a basement or crawl.
 

Energy Efficiency. In the HVAC field there are different ratings for different things. First, there is SEER rating. This stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is the measurement of the efficiency of the Air Conditioning only. The higher the number the lower you power bill should be. There is AFUE which is Annual Fuel Usage Efficiency, this is the efficiency of your gas or propane furnace. The highest AFUE rated furnace on the market is made by York and is about 98%. Next is the HSPF rating which stands for Heating Seasonal Performance Factor and is the rating for the heat pumps in the heat mode.

Size of Equipment. You should only have your system sized by a licensed mechanical contractor or a licensed engineer. If your system is not sized correctly, there will be serious consequences. If the AC is too big and the space is cooled too fast, you won't get rid of enough humidity, and you'll have a mold problem. If the equipment is too small, your system will never cycle because it will always be running.

Type of Refrigerant. All residential heat pumps and air conditioners manufacture after 12/31/09 will have the new Puron R 410a refrigerant which is better for the ozone.
